What is a private blog network. Definition, detection footprint, exposure.

An operator-controlled network of sites linking to a target as their primary editorial purpose. Detection runs on whois, hosting, theme-reuse footprint signals plus user-behavior telemetry. The definition, as a structural read

A private blog network (the literal three-letter form is PBN on the link-spam policy surface) is a set of operator-controlled sites whose primary editorial purpose is to link to a target site for ranking manipulation. The defining markers run on two axes together: intent (links primarily for ranking, not editorial value) and pattern (multiple operator-controlled sites contributing the same signal).

A single operator-owned site that happens to link to another operator-owned property is not the pattern. The shape that triggers detection is the multi-site network where the linking is the primary purpose and the footprint shows operator control across the set.

The detection footprint

Google's link-spam evaluation looks at the graph shape, not at any single link. The footprint signals that surface a private-network pattern:

  • Whois ownership clustering: registrant, registrant email, registrant organization repeating across the linking set.
  • Hosting-infrastructure clustering: same IP range, same hosting provider, same nameservers across linker sites whose topical content has no reason to share infrastructure.
  • Theme and structure reuse: same CMS, same theme, same layout choices across linker sites that purport to be independent editorial publications.
  • Content-thinness signatures: linker sites with shallow content, low publication frequency, no real audience engagement, no organic-traffic acquisition outside of internal referral.
  • Topical orphaning: linker sites whose own content has no topical relationship to the target they link to.
  • NavBoost user-behavior signals (disclosed in the 2024 DOJ antitrust exhibits): linker pages that drive no engaged sessions contribute different signal than pages that do.

No single signal triggers the pattern read. Several together do.

The exposure surface and the recovery routing

Algorithmic exposure: since Penguin 4.0 / 2016-09-23 the URL-level discount runs automatically on detected manipulative links. The receiving site does not get sitewide-demoted by the link signal; it loses the equity from the discounted links.
