§ 38 · Penguin 4.0 Url-Level Model

Penguin 4.0. Real-time URL-level link discounting.

Launched September 23, 2016, Penguin 4.0 runs continuously inside the core ranking pipeline. Manipulative links are zero-weighted at URL level in real time. The site receiving the link loses that link's equity; the site is not sitewide-demoted by the link signal alone. The model has held through subsequent link spam updates.

The launch and what shipped

Penguin launched on April 24, 2012 as a sitewide algorithmic demotion against manipulative link patterns. Several versions shipped through 2012-2014 as periodic data-refresh rollouts. Penguin 4.0 launched on September 23, 2016 and changed the model in two structural ways.

First, real-time integration. Penguin became part of the core ranking pipeline rather than a separate periodic rollout. Link-signal changes are evaluated as the link graph re-crawls rather than batched up for the next Penguin refresh.

Second, URL-level discounting. Instead of demoting the receiving site as a whole, Penguin 4.0 zero-weights the manipulative link on a per-link basis. The site loses the equity from that link; the site is not site-wide-demoted by the link signal alone.

What the URL-level discount looks like on a site

A site whose inbound profile carried 1,000 manipulative links before Penguin 4.0 would have been at risk of sitewide ranking loss until the trigger pattern was remediated and a Penguin refresh ran. After Penguin 4.0, the same 1,000 manipulative links are zero-weighted at URL level in real time. The site's ranking signal reflects only the editorial inbound profile that remains.

The operational implication: for suspected algorithmic post-2016 cases, the recovery shape is not "remove the trigger and wait for the next Penguin refresh." The discounting has already happened. The work is at the acquisition source (stop the pattern), at outbound attribute hygiene, and at the editorial inbound profile that determines what link signal remains. Penguin demotion recovery covers the engagement.

What still requires the manual workflow

Manual-action cases for unnatural links remain a separate surface. The Manual Actions report in Search Console names the violation; Google requires documented removal outreach plus the disavow plus a reconsideration request authored to the three-element shape. The URL-level algorithmic discount does not substitute for the manual workflow because the manual-action is a human review rather than an algorithmic signal.

The March 5, 2024 link spam update extended the continuous-evaluation surface across more pattern types. It did not replace Penguin or change the URL-level zero-weighting model. Spam link patterns covers the pattern markers; NoFollow, Sponsored, UGC hints covers the outbound-attribute surface that pairs with Penguin's inbound work. Engagement entries route through Penguin demotion recovery, the disavow service, and the program.

URL-LEVEL MODEL QUESTIONS

What operators ask about the URL-level model.

  1. 01.

    When did Penguin 4.0 launch?

September 23, 2016. Google announced it as the final Penguin version that would run continuously in real time, integrated into the core ranking pipeline rather than as periodic data-refresh rollouts. Google Penguin update covers the version history end to end.

  2. 02.

What changed at URL level versus sitewide?

Pre-Penguin-4.0: a site whose inbound profile read as manipulative could lose ranking signal sitewide for as long as the issue persisted. Post-Penguin-4.0: manipulative links are zero-weighted at URL level. The site receiving the link loses the equity from that specific link; the site is not sitewide-demoted by the link signal alone.

  3. 03.

Does Penguin 4.0 mean disavow is unnecessary?

Largely yes for suspected algorithmic post-2016 cases. The discount runs automatically. Disavow remains operationally required for explicit manual actions for unnatural links named in Search Console, where Google rejects reconsideration requests filed without it. Disavow meaning covers the role.

  4. 04.

Did Penguin 4.0 end with the March 2024 spam update?

No. The March 5, 2024 link spam update tightened the continuous-evaluation surface across more pattern types; it did not replace Penguin or change the post-2016 URL-level zero-weighting discount. The operative discounting model is the same.

If your link profile carries pre-Penguin-4.0-era pattern signals or your Search Console flagged unnatural links, book the diagnostic.

We read the inbound profile against the URL-level discount model, separate manual versus algorithmic, scope the acquisition-source and outbound-attribute work for algorithmic cases, and run the full disavow + outreach + reconsideration workflow for manual cases.
